Children's Counselling

When might my child benefit from counselling?
Children may benefit from additional emotional support when they are experiencing:
-
Anxiety, worries or excessive fears
-
Low self-esteem or confidence
-
Big or difficult emotions
-
Anger or emotional outbursts
-
Sadness or low mood
-
Difficulties managing emotions
-
Friendship or social difficulties
-
Changes in behaviour
-
School-related worries
-
Difficulties with separation
-
Family changes or parental separation
-
Bereavement and loss
-
Significant life changes or transitions
-
Difficulties adjusting to change
-
Feelings of being overwhelmed
-
Difficulties communicating feelings
-
Emotional responses to difficult or distressing experiences
You do not need to wait until your child is in crisis before seeking support. Sometimes having a safe, independent person to talk to can help children develop the understanding and coping skills they need before difficulties become more overwhelming.
How is Little Lighthouse Counselling different from other counsellors?
Little Lighthouse Counselling is different because we have developed a specialist service around the whole child, not simply the counselling session. Unlike many independent child counsellors who focus primarily on one-to-one therapy, we provide a joined-up pathway that can include assessment, tailored therapeutic intervention, structured programmes, outcome measurement, parent guidance, progress reviews and school collaboration. Our specialist programmes—including Calm Seas for anxiety, Bright Star for self-esteem, Big Feelings for emotional regulation, Lighthouse of Friendship for social and friendship difficulties, Safe Harbour for family transitions, and Healing Hearts for bereavement and loss—provide children with purposeful, structured support while still allowing therapy to be individualised to their needs.
This combination of specialist children's expertise, structured therapeutic pathways, measurable outcomes and partnership with parents and schools creates a more comprehensive service than a traditional standalone counselling practice.
A safe space for your child
We understand that reaching out for counselling for your child can feel like a big step. You may be unsure whether counselling is appropriate, whether your child will engage, or even how to explain counselling to them. Our approach is designed to make the process as comfortable and child-friendly as possible.
Depending on your child's age and individual needs, sessions may incorporate:
-
Talking therapy
-
Drawing, painting, games and other creative methods
-
Emotional regulation
-
Coping strategies
-
Confidence building
-
Psychoeducation
Our child-centred approach
At Little Lighthouse Counselling, we believe children should be involved in their own therapeutic journey. We don't simply focus on what's "wrong". We take time to understand the child behind the difficulty.
Our counsellors work collaboratively with children and young people, helping them understand themselves, develop emotional skills and identify ways forward.
Our approach is:
-
Child-centred
-
Inclusive
-
Trauma-informed
-
Evidence-informed
-
Collaborative
